The Banking Concept Of Education - 958 Words
In the excerpt from ââ¬Å"The Banking Concept of Educationâ⬠the author, Paulo Freire explains the critical flaw in the current education system. He continues by offering his believed solution to this problem. The two concepts Freire discusses in this excerpt are the ââ¬Å"banking conceptâ⬠of education and the ââ¬Å"problem-posing methodâ⬠of education. The ââ¬Å"banking conceptâ⬠is talked about rather negatively, whereas the ââ¬Å"problem-posing methodâ⬠is talked about highly. Freire believes in the ââ¬Å"problem-posing methodâ⬠and that students should have free-will to a certain extent in the classroom with less authoritative power from the teacher during discussions. This ââ¬Å"flawedâ⬠concept in education today is the oppressive ââ¬Å"depositingâ⬠of information (banking education) by teachers to students. ââ¬Å"Banking education (for obvious reasons) attempts, by mythicizing reality, to conceal certain facts which explain the way people exist in the worldâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (p.224) The ââ¬Å"banking conceptâ⬠is an act that hinders the intellectual growth of students by turning them into ââ¬Å"receptorsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"collectorsâ⬠of information that have no true connection to their lives.
